Nmap, or “Network Mapper,” is a network discovery, analysis, and auditing tool used by both network defenders and network attackers. As a highly flexible tool with dozens of ways to map networks, Nmap has become a critically acclaimed and well-supported cybersecurity tool.
Using Nmap, we can perform network sweeps to discover hosts on the network and effectively “map” the network topology. This is great for auditing purposes, but it is also valuable information for a penetration tester or a hacker.
Nmap is also a port scanner that allows network administrators to identify open ports and running services on their network or critical systems. This makes Nmap an excellent tool for identifying unwanted open ports/services that could be discovered and potentially exploited by a hacker. Another very useful feature is Nmap's operating system (OS) fingerprinting capabilities.
Definition of Nmap:
At a high level, Nmap can be defined as a tool that can detect or detect services running on an internet-connected system. It is commonly used by network administrators to identify potential security flaws in their network systems. It can also be used to automate many additional tasks such as monitoring service update schedules.
